Tijuana, Mexico February 28, 2000 -- Carrie Kahn of station KPBS-San Diego reports on the February 27, 2000 killing of the police chief of Tijuana, Mexico. 49-year-old Alfredo de la Torre was killed by unidentified gunmen who riddled his car with bullets as he drove alone in the border city. No one has claimed responsibility, and police have not yet made any arrests. Tijuana has been the scene of many killings related to the drug and illegal arms trades. De la Torre's officers have in recent months cracked down on the growing number of rings that smuggle illegal aliens into the United States.
