Mexico - February 25, 2000 -- Carrie Kahn reports from Mexico City that the lack of affordable credit is keeping many small and medium-sized Mexican businesses from growing. Many entrepreneurs don't even try to get bank loans, not only because interest rates are running at about 50%, but also because of the copious amounts of paperwork required. The inability to get credit helps drive seventy percent of small firms out of business in their first year of operation.
