Two children sit at home next to Christian graffiti on a doorway. Both Islam and Christianity are practiced in the Nuba Mountains and it is not uncommon to find families practicing both faiths. The peaceful co-existence is a sharp contrast to the rest of Sudan, which is fighting a 17-year-old war between the Islamic fundamentalist northern government of Omar Bashir and the Christian and traditional faiths of the south, represented by John Garang's Sudan People's Liberation Army(SPLA).

 

A woman cuts sorghum during the harvest in Mirawi, which must be carefully rationed to last until next year's crop. This year the rainy season was unusually short and Nuba leaders worry that their food supplies will not last until next year's harvest.

Wrestling match

A young boy is covered with chalk after winning a wrestling match during a regional tournament in Serif. Boys begin wrestling at an early age, practicing in the fields as they tend their family's goats.
