Three sangomas in training

These three sangomas are in training. The training takes six months. They work in Mary's neighborhood. To be a sangoma gives these young women status in the community.

 

This is an incredible orphanage called Acres of Love outside of Johannesburg. It is truly a home and not an institution. This orphanage is in an affluent community and there are always lots of arms to hug children. What made this orphanage stand out from the rest was how happy and loved the children seemed.

Nicky Lazar, in the sunglasses, was my field producer for two and a half weeks. She is a native South African. I couldn't have gotten through the story without. The baby I'm holding is Tinashe, and she is six months old.
