Photo Essay: Eritrea (continued)

I love to photograph weddings when I travel, particularly in areas of conflict. It's a sign that life goes on, even in the toughest times. Times are tough in Eritrea now. Although it has been quiet along the battlefront since last spring, rumors are running rampant that the next offensive is imminent.

February is historically the month Ethiopians have attacked. With the long peace-making process at a stalemate, Eritreans live their lives hoping for the best and expecting the worst. They're waiting for war, but they're praying for peace.

ERITREAN COMMUNITY CONNECTS ONLINE

Some 40,000 Eritreans live in the United States, according to the Embassy of Eritrea, with the largest group (about 7,000) living in and around Washington, D.C., and the second-largest group ( about 4,000) settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, primarily in the East Bay. Other significant populations of Eritreans live in Minneapolis, Seattle, New York, Dallas and Atlanta.

There are numerous Web sites with information about Eritrea and the Eritrean community in the United States, including:

www.dehai.org

Started by three university students (studying in the United States, Canada and Europe), this site is perceived as the more academic site. It's a comprehensive site with news articles, opinion pieces and links to other Web sites. There's also a news list where members pay dues and post messages within the group.

visafric.com

Established by an extended Eritrean family (one member in Ottawa, one in San Francisco, one in Asmara). The site operates a news agency that does its own reporting. It posts news from Eritrean papers. It has good links to other sites and organizations.

www.asmarino.com

Started by one man as a public service. The site bills itself as ``a cyberspace meeting place for all Eritreans and their friends around the world.'' The site posts social as well as political discussions.

www.euabayarea.org

The local site of Eritreans United Association, an organization of Eritreans in the Bay Area. The site posts community events and news and offers comprehensive links to other sites.
