The International Reporting Project (IRP) is pleased to announce a 10-day Gatekeeper Editors Trip to Turkey September 14-25, 2008, for U.S. editors and senior producers interested in learning more about this key country.

Gatekeepers are any senior journalists executive editors, managing editors, broadcast producers, wire editors, editorial page editors, business editors, op-ed page editors and others who help select editorial content.

This trip will focus on the political, economic, religious, health and development issues that affect this country that connects Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Gatekeepers will meet with the top Turkish officials and key opinion-makers. Editors will interview leaders in government, business, religion, diplomacy, and Turks from all walks of life. Gatekeepers will meet with activists on womens rights, minority issues, health topics and examine the question of Turkeys accession to the European Union. Editors will travel to Ankara, Istanbul and Diyarbakir during the trip to learn more about crucial issues affecting this country of 72 million people.

The International Reporting Project (IRP) will take up to 12 U.S. gatekeepers on an all-expenses-paid fact-finding trip to Turkey from September 14 25, 2008. You are invited to nominate yourself or another gatekeeper from your news organizations senior staff. The trip will follow the models of previous IRP Gatekeeper trips to Uganda, Korea, Nigeria, Egypt, India, Lebanon/Syria, South Africa, Brazil, and Indonesia.

All Gatekeepers must gather in Washington DC by 12 noon on Sunday, September 14. Our program begins with a lunch briefing by an expert on Turkey. Our flight to Istanbul will depart that evening. We will return to Washington DC on September 25.

All Gatekeepers are responsible for paying their own way between their home cities and Washington, DC. All of the participants travel, hotel and meal expenses in Turkey will be covered by the International Reporting Project (IRP) unless gatekeepers or their organizations choose to pay their own expenses.

Editors interested in applying for the 2008 Gatekeepers Fact-Finding Trip to Turkey are required to fill out an application form for the fellowship. Application forms must also be accompanied by a professional resume of no more than two pages. Applicants must have a passport that is valid for travel at the time of their application.

Completed applications should be sent by email to [email protected], or by fax to 202-663-7762, or by postal mail to the International Reporting Project, 1619 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. Washington, DC. 20036.

All applications must be postmarked by July 15. Applicants will be informed of the selection results in late July.
