Spring 2006 IRP Fellow Kelly McEvers

A typical view in Dagestan, which is situated along
the grand Caucasus mountains. The region
known as the Caucasus is an isthmus that
stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian
Sea, is home to more than 100 ethnic groups,
and has appeared in numerous works of Russian
literature over the centuries.

Authorities in Moscow have been increasingly using force in an attempt to squash the radical Islamic insurgency in Dagestan, the Muslim republic in Russia's southwest. However, correspondent Kelly McEvers tells anchor Lisa Mullins that regional officals are now pushing for a more moderate approach.
