Joyce M. Davis has just ended a six-year association with Knight Ridder Newspapers as Deputy Foreign Editor, and will soon move to Prague to become Associate Director of Broadcasting for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Davis is a specialist in the Middle East and Islamic movements. Her newest book entitled Martyrs: Innocence, Vengeance and Despair in the Middle East, has recently been published by Palgrave-MacMillan, and a second, updated paperback edition will be published soon. The book offers insights into Islam's teaching on martyrdom and its connection to the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. Davis also is author of Between Jihad and Salaam: Profiles in Islam, a collection of profiles and interviews with Islamic leaders around the world. She also has begun work on a third book about the role of moderate Muslims in the war on terrorism and the experiences of Muslim Americans in the United States after September 11, 2001.

With almost 30 years of journalism experience, Davis has been a reporter, columnist and editor in both broadcast and print. She began her journalism career at The New Orleans Times-Picayune, and served as foreign editor and Director of News Staffing for National Public Radio as well as an on-air reporter, doing special reports on the Middle East and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Davis is a former senior fellow with the United States Institute of Peace, and a member of the board of advisors of Women In International Security and the Georgetown University Journal of International Affairs.
