Peter Bergen is a freelance journalist and author of Holy War, Inc., about Osama bin Laden and Islamic militant groups around world. He has served as CNN's analyst on global terrorism and covered the bombing of the USS Cole in Washington and Yemen. As a correspondent for CNN and The Daily Telegraph of London he covered the December 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines jet in Afghanistan. Since late 1999 he has written extensively about Islamic militants for publications such as The New Republic and The Washington Times, and has been a commentator on PBS and NPR to discuss terrorism.
From mid 1998 to late 1999 he worked as a correspondent-producer for CNN on such stories as Osama bin Laden's global network, cruise missile attacks in Afghanistan and others. He was a program editor for "CNN Impact," a co-production of CNN and TIME, from 1997 to 1998. Previously he worked for CNN as a producer and senior producer on a wide variety of international and U.S. national stories. From 1985 to 1990 he worked for ABC News in a variety of positions, including associate producer. In 1983 he worked for Channel 4 in the United Kingdom as a researcher for a film on Afghan refugees.
He is the recipient of a Leonard Silk Journalism Fellowship and an Emmy award for his work as program editor for "CNN Impact." In 1994 he won an Overseas Press Club award for best foreign affairs documentary for "Kingdom of Cocaine." He received a B.A. in Modern History from New College at Oxford University.
