| 11 Gatekeeper Editors travel to Turkey
The Gatekeepers met with a wide range of Turkish leaders in fields such as politics, business, religion, media, medicine and health, education, arts and culture and other areas. "Turkey is a key country for news organizations to cover. It's facing challenges in politics, religion, economics, health issues, development and women's rights issues," said John Schidlovsky, director of the International Reporting Project (IRP).
Topics included the future of Turkish democracy, media and freedom of expression, Islam in Turkey and the country's strategic role as an energy transit hub. The Turkey trip is the 10th Gatekeepers trip since the program began in 2000. Previous IRP Gatekeeper editors have traveled to Indonesia, Brazil, South Africa, Lebanon/Syria, India, Egypt, Nigeria, Korea and Uganda.
