Vanessa Gezari has been a foreign and national writer at the St. Petersburg Times since 2004. She has reported for the paper from Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Russia, and traveled the Gulf Coast extensively to write about Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Before joining the Times, she spent nearly three years freelancing from New Delhi and Kabul, covering an election in Kashmir and reporting on Afghanistan for the Chicago Tribune. Her stories from the region also appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun and Slate. In 2004, she spent six weeks training Afghan journalists with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting in Mazar-i-Sharif. Before moving to South Asia, she was a one-year resident at the Chicago Tribune and a general assignment and city hall reporter at The Blade in Toledo, Ohio. She has a B.A. in English from Yale.
