Michael Gartland is the religion editor for The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C., which he joined in 2002. Previously, he worked at The Charlotte Observer and at Newsday. He earned his M.S. degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where he focused on religion reporting. While at the school, he traveled to Russia and Ukraine to report on the state of religion in those countries. He grew up in New York and also has worked as a producer for the teen web site, bolt.com, and as a copy editor, a janitor and a referee.
