Otto Pohl is a freelance writer and photographer currently based in Berlin. He began his journalistic career in 1992 as a photographer at the Moscow bureau of The New York Times. He traveled extensively across the former Soviet Union, covering stories such as the upheaval in the Siberian oil industry, the drug trade in Kyrgyzstan and the attempted coup attempt against Boris Yeltsin. In 1995 he quit journalism to pursue business opportunities in Moscow and later in San Francisco. He returned to journalism in 2000 as a freelance, first in Spain and later in Kenya. His work has appeared in publications including The New York Times, the Boston Globe Magazine, Newsweek, the International Herald Tribune and The Christian Science Monitor. He received a B.A. in Political Science from Cornell University.
