Rena Singer is a freelance reporter based in Jerusalem. At the time of the fellowship, she was a staff writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer. She worked at the Inquirer from 1994 to 2000 covering local and regional stories and also on assignment from Beijing. She left the Inquirer to freelance from Africa where she worked for US News & World Report, the Boston Globe, USA Today and other newspapers for five years. Previously, she lived in China for two years, teaching English at a college and a hospital in Kunming. She received a MA in journalism from the University of Michigan and a BA in anthropology and psychology at Washington University in St. Louis.
