The International Reporting Project (IRP) has selected 12 senior editors and producers from across the United States to participate in a two-week trip to Saudi Arabia in May 2012 as part of the IRP’s signature “Gatekeeper Editors” program.
The senior journalists will take part in an intensive program to learn about Saudi Arabia and issues affecting the Middle East. Each year the IRP selects two groups of “Gatekeeper Editors” to travel to a country or region to learn more about critical global issues to help them improve their news organizations’ international coverage. Many Gatekeepers produce stories or blog posts from the trips.
“This is our first trip back to the Middle East since our visit to Egypt in 2006 spotlighted many of the important issues in that country,” said John Schidlovsky, director of the Washington-based IRP. “Saudi Arabia is not well known to most Americans, and we are eagerly looking forward to learning more about this key country in the Middle East.”
Editors selected for the Saudi Arabia trip, scheduled for May 5-18, 2012, are:
David A. Andelman, editor-in-chief, World Policy Journal
Mindy Kay Bricker, editor, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists
Christa Case Bryant, Middle East editor, The Christian Science Monitor
Hugh Eakin, senior editor, New York Review of Books
Arlene Getz, editor-in-charge, media, Reuters
Joseph Gregory, deputy editor, Views, International Herald Tribune
Chuck Holmes, supervising editor, “Morning Edition,” National Public Radio
Rita Henley Jensen, editor-in-chief, Women’s eNews
Adam Kushner, deputy editor, National Journal
Ann Lopez, studio director/producer, “The World,” PRI/BBC
Douglas Stanglin, editor, “On Deadline” news blog, USA Today
Jonathan Tepperman, managing editor, Foreign Affairs
The Gatekeepers will meet with a wide range of Saudis and explore issues in health, energy, politics and regional security, economics, women’s issues, religion, culture and media. The Saudi trip is the 17th IRP Gatekeepers trip since 2000. Previous IRP Gatekeeper editors have traveled to Rwanda, Indonesia (in 2000 and 2011), Liberia, China, Peru, Kenya, Turkey, Uganda, Korea, Nigeria, Egypt, India, Lebanon/Syria, South Africa and Brazil.
In addition to the Gatekeeper Fellowships, the IRP continues to offer individual fellowships to U.S. journalists to travel overseas on five-week reporting trips. Support for the IRP is provided by foundations, individuals and non-governmental donors. The program is based in Washington at the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
