Past Gatekeeper Trips

Indonesia 2011
The Gatekeepers traveled to Jakarta, Yogyakarta and to the island of Borneo (Kalimantan) where they met with scores of Indonesians including President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, religious and political leaders, health officials, wildlife and environmental activists, business leaders, media editors and producers, university administrators and students, women’s group leaders, law enforcement officials, economists, human rights activists and many others.

Rwanda 2011
This trip to Rwanda will focus on issues such as health, food security, the environment, education, economic development, post-conflict reconciliation and Rwanda’s role in the region.

China 2010
The Gatekeepers met with a wide range of Chinese citizens and explored issues in economics, development, health, environment, education, agriculture, media and other areas.

Liberia 2010
This trip to Liberia focused on issues such as health, environment, economic recovery and development, women’s rights, refugee resettlement and the search for political stability after 14 years of a devastating civil war that left an estimated 200,000 people dead in the country of three million. Gatekeepers met with a wide cross-section of Liberians to learn how this country and the region are recovering from the 1989-2003 conflict that has required the continuing presence of UN peacekeepers.

Kenya 2009
The Gatekeepers met with a wide range of Kenyan leaders in fields such as politics, business, media, medicine and health, education, environment, agriculture, arts and culture and other areas.

Peru 2009
This IRP Gatekeepers trip focused on the political, economic, health, development and environmental issues that affect Peru, South America’s third largest country in area and fourth largest in population. Gatekeepers met with the top leaders of the country and key opinion-makers.

Uganda 2008
The Spring 2008 IRP Gatekeepers traveled to Uganda where they met with leaders and citizens from all walks of life to discuss agriculture, business, media, health, environment, conservation and science. Editors were able to discuss a wide range of these topics with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni during a two and a half hour interview. The Gatekeepers also traveled to the Rakai Health Services Program in southwestern Uganda, Jinja on Lake Victoria, and to the tropical rain forest near Masindi.

Turkey 2008
The Fall 2008 IRP Gatekeepers traveled to Turkey where they met with a wide range of Turkish leaders in fields such as politics, business, religion, media, medicine and health, education, arts and culture and other areas.Topics included the future of Turkish democracy, media and freedom of expression, Islam in Turkey and the country’s strategic role as an energy transit hub.

Nigeria 2007
The 2007 Gatekeepers traveled to Africa’s most populous country in the run-up to critical presidential elections. They reported on such issues as the future of the conflict-ridden Niger Delta, political corruption, and poverty.

Korea 2007
In Fall 2007 IRP Gatekeepers traveled to the Korean Peninsula, where they spent most of their trip in South Korea interviewing a wide cross-section of leaders in government, politics, business, health, academics and media. Their trip to also included a fascinating 26-hour visit to North Korea’s Mt. Kumgang resort.
