Vanessa Gezari, a 2007 IRP Fellow, has been awarded a Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan for their 2011-2012 program. Fellows use the eight-month funded sabbatical for research, seminars, and training, in addition to participating in three international news tours, this year to Buenos Aires, São Paulo and Istanbul. The focus of her research will be on Afghanistan's storytelling tradition. During her 2007 IRP Fellowship, Gezari reported on the rehabilitation of child soldiers in Liberia, including the roles of soldiers in society and war criminals in the government, the country's fractured populace and torn infrastructure, the journey of a child soldier to forge an identity and a future, and the role of religion in war.
