Meet the IRP Gatekeepers to Rwanda
12 Senior News Editors and Producers Selected for IRP Gatekeeper Trip to Rwanda
The International Reporting Project (IRP) has selected 12 senior editors and producers from across the United States to participate in a two-week trip to Rwanda in November 2011 as part of the IRP’s signature “Gatekeeper Editors” program.
The senior journalists will take part in an intensive program to learn about Rwanda and issues affecting other countries in Africa. Each year the IRP selects two groups of “Gatekeeper Editors” to travel to a country or region to learn more about critical global issues to help them improve their news organizations’ international coverage. Many Gatekeepers produce stories or blog posts from the trips.
“This is the 7th country in Africa that we’ve taken editors to in the 12 years of our organizing these trips, which underscores IRP’s commitment to increasing US media coverage of Africa,” said John Schidlovsky, director of the Washington-based IRP.
Editors selected for the Rwanda trip, scheduled for November 6-19, 2011, are:
Nicholas Aster, founder/publisher, TriplePundit.com, San Francisco
Tamara Banks, host/producer, KBDI Colorado Public TV, Denver
Sharon Broussard, associate editor, The Plain Dealer, Cleveland
Peter Canellos, editorial page editor, The Boston Globe
Marc Charney, staff editor Sunday Review, The New York Times
Rebecca Davis, senior producer, National Public Radio, Washington DC
Amy Hollyfield, government and politics editor, St. Petersburg Times
Sue Horton, op-ed and Sunday Opinion editor, Los Angeles Times
Mary Rose Madden, senior producer, WYPR-FM, Baltimore
Andrew Meldrum, deputy managing editor, GlobalPost, Boston
Tom Paulson, host/reporter, KPLU Humanosphere.org, Seattle
John Rash, editorial page writer, Minneapolis Star Tribune
The Gatekeepers will meet with a wide range of Rwandans and explore issues in health, economic development, environment, politics and regional security, reconciliation and justice, religion, education, agriculture, media and other areas. The Rwanda trip is the 16th IRP Gatekeepers trip since 2000. Previous IRP Gatekeeper editors have traveled to Indonesia (in 2000 and 2011), Liberia, China, Peru, Kenya, Turkey, Uganda, Korea, Nigeria, Egypt, India, Lebanon/Syria, South Africa and Brazil.
In addition to the Gatekeeper Fellowships, the IRP continues to offer individual fellowships to U.S. reporters to travel overseas on five-week reporting trips. Support for the IRP is provided by foundations, individuals and non-governmental donors. The program is based in Washington at the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
