Hillary Clinton flew to Nairobi this week to address a US-Africa trade conference, but she had strong words for her Kenyan hosts. Senior US officials are deeply concerned about the threat of instability in this key US ally and East Africa’s largest economy following a flawed presidential election last year that led to widespread violence and over a thousand deaths. They fear Kenya’s leaders have done little to address the underlying issues, and that inaction could lead to fresh violence. “Unfortunately, resolving that crisis has not yet translated into the kind of political progress that the Kenyan people deserve,” Clinton said, after meeting the Kenyan president and prime minister on August 5, 2009.
