Kibera, Africa’s largest slum of 1 million in Nairobi, Kenya, has grown over decades yet still lacks basic government services of clean running water and sanitation. Unemployment is vast, health services are limited, and preventable diseases claim many young lives. Miriam Pepper, Star editorial page editor, joined 12 American journalists who visited the area in June as part of a fellowship program led by the International Reporting Project.
