Jon Emont is a freelance journalist writing from Southeast Asia. He writes regularly for The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Atlantic.com, and TIME, along with numerous other publications. Recent features include a story about international tobacco companies’ efforts to dominate Indonesia, the world’s only Islamic boarding school for transgender women, and a profile of an Indonesian novelist trying to reform Indonesia’s mental health system. He has also reported extensively from Myanmar and the Middle East, where he covered the Egyptian military’s coup against the Muslim Brotherhood government from Cairo. Emont came to Indonesia in 2014 on a Fulbright research fellowship, and speaks Indonesian. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 2012 with a degree in history.
