Joseph F. Frolik is the chief editorial writer for The Plain Dealer, Ohio’s largest newspaper, located in the city of Cleveland. He joined the paper’s editorial board in 2001 and became its chief editorial writer in 2009. Before joining the editorial board, Frolik had been the newspaper’s national correspondent since 1987. He covered four presidential campaigns, reported on breaking news including space shots and earthquakes and wrote in-depth stories on political and social policy trends in the United States. His 1988 series on the political impacts of demographic change won a National Headliner Award. In 1993, he won state awards for a series on the broken connection between marriage and child-bearing in American society. Shortly after becoming an editorial writer, Frolik spearheaded a multi-year, multi-media collaboration that examined the economic problems and opportunities facing the Greater Cleveland region. This “Quiet Crisis’’ project helped spawn a series of public-private initiatives aimed at making the region more economically competitive. Frolik came to The Plain Dealer in June of 1981. He worked on the features and metros staffs before moving to the national desk to cover Pope John II’s 1987 visit to the United States. In 1982, he was part of an investigative team that won an Overseas Press Club award for its examination of abuses by international charities.
