Krista Mahr is a Hong Kong-based journalist who has reported in print and video for TIME since 2007, covering natural disasters, politics, immigration, the environment, energy and agriculture in Japan, Australia, Burma, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, and Cambodia. Most recently, she was in Japan reporting on the March 11 earthquake and nuclear crisis.

Originally from Los Angeles, Mahr attended the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley, the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies and the University of California at Santa Cruz, where she obtained a B.A. in Literature. Before moving to Asia, she lived in Reykjavik, Iceland, where she was the editor in chief of Iceland Review magazine and covered Arctic issues for the Associated Press, BBC World Radio, and other news outlets.
