Lucy Westcott is a reporter for Newsweek based in New York City and focused on international news. Originally from southwestern United Kingdom, she arrived in the United States in 2012 to pursue a master’s of journalism degree at the University of Maryland. She got her start in journalism writing copy for a local police station as an undergraduate at the University of Sussex and worked for The Wire, Bustle, Newsday, the BBC and the American Journalism Review before joining Newsweek in 2014. Her writing has also appeared in The Guardian. Westcott has been dedicated to reporting on development topics since interning as a United Nations correspondent at the Inter Press Service in 2013. Last year she went on a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) trip to Egypt to report on the country’s efforts to end female genital mutilation and travelled to Jordan to report on disabled Syrian refugees living in Amman and Azraq refugee camp. She’s now focusing on telling the stories of recently resettled refugees to the United States.
