Kavita Menon is a freelance journalist based in New York. Until August 2003, she headed the Asia program at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a press freedom organization. In her five years at CPJ, she reported in countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Previously, she worked as a freelance reporter in India, where she filed stories for Monitor Radio and Ms. magazine. In 1995 and 1996, she worked first as an intern and then as assistant producer for "On the Media," a National Public Radio program produced by WNYC in New York. She received her master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and spent her undergraduate years at the University of California at Berkeley, where she was the news director of the community radio station KALX.
