Lucy Kafanov is an independent print and television journalist who covers the Middle East, Afghanistan and Russia. With a decade of experience in news, Kafanov has reported from more than 20 countries, investigating the deaths of Russian soldiers in Ukraine, reporting on the toll of drone strikes on civilians in Yemen and Pakistan, covering sectarian strife and human rights abuses in Iraq as well as the sweep of ISIS across Iraq and Syria, and documenting the legacy of America’s longest war on communities in Afghanistan. Prior to moving abroad to work as a foreign correspondent, Kafanov spent several years reporting on politics and policy in Washington. As a political reporter for the PBS show “NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” Kafanov covered the 2008 presidential election and the U.S. Congress. Her work has appeared in Newsweek, The Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, Vice, Al Jazeera English and more.
