Matt Jenkins

Fellows Fall 2011
Freelance journalist

Matt Jenkins is a Berkeley-based freelance journalist and contributing editor to High Country News. He has written for The New York Times, Smithsonian magazine, Men’s Journal, Saveur and several other national publications.

For much of the past decade, his work focused on water, drought and climate change in the western United States. He has covered the Navajo tribe’s quest to win valuable water rights; the unintended environmental damage caused by water-efficiency projects; and Los Angeles’ efforts to use Wall Street risk-management techniques to protect itself against water shortages.

His stories have also occasionally ranged beyond water, and he has reported on farm-machinery demolition derbies, criminal syndicates that have made millions of dollars by fraudulently recycling aluminum cans, and the secret history of Corn Nuts.

His work has been supported by the Fund for Investigative Journalism, and he received the 2006 James V. Risser Prize for Western Environmental Journalism. He graduated from Carleton College with a B.A. in Asian Studies. He can be reached by emailing sunmountain[at]prodigy[dot]net.
