Sumitra Deb Roy is a health journalist with 11 years of work experience. She presently reports on developments in civic and private healthcare for Mumbai's The Times of India, which has a readership of 1.6 million and is the highest circulated English daily in the world. She has also reported on higher education in her previous roles at the Hindustan Times and Daily News and Analysis. She holds a postgraduate degree in journalism from the Asian College of Journalism in Chennai. She reported the 2014 malaria outbreak in Mumbai that forced the government to accept that the outbreak could not be contained with the resources at hand. She is also credited for a series of exposés on malnutrition among tribal children in India’s financial capital. She was the first to report on the study conducted on children suffering from drug-resistant tuberculosis, which won her the REACH Lilly MDR-TB Partnership Media Award in 2014 and a fellowship at the Global Lung Health conference in Barcelona.
