Jose Miguel Calatayud is a freelance journalist who has been based in Istanbul since October 2012. He covers the region for Spanish newspaper El País and contributes to other international media, most recently AFP, Al Jazeera and Austrian newspaper Der Standard. Previously he covered sub-Saharan Africa for El País between September 2011 and September 2012. Before that, he was the East African correspondent of the Spanish news agency Efe from January to September 2010. He has also travelled around Africa and reported for international media like IRIN and Jane’s and, in Spanish, Periodismo Humano, Foreign Policy and Radio France International.
He has reported from Kenya, Somalia, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Ethiopia, Mauritania, South Sudan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Turkey. His feature “A la horca con 14 años” (“To the gallows at 14’), published in the Sunday supplement of El País, won the Dario D’Angelo award of the Marco Luchetta Foundation. He has an MA in International Journalism (with distinction) from City University in London and two BAs in Philosophy and Journalism from the University of Valencia in Spain.
